LC and SCAN to host sexual harassment presentation, art installation

With February designated as Dating Violence Awareness month, LC and SCAN partnered once again to address the serious issue of sexual violence and relay a message of help to students, faculty, staff and the community at large that have been affected by these acts of cruelty.

A sexual assault awareness presentation will be held at the LC South Campus on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the College of Health Sciences Building in room A118 and at the LC Ft. McIntosh Campus Kazen Student Center on Thursday, Feb. 16. The art exhibit will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and keynote speakers will deliver their remarks from 12 to 1 p.m. These events are free and open to the community.What-were-you-wearing-Exhibit-4.jpg

Sexual Assault Services and Information (SASI) Program Director Sylvia Flores will discuss this sensitive but important topic. Her presentation will include topics such as increasing awareness of the prevalence of sexual violence, the definition of sexual assault, facts and myths about sexual assault, types of sexual assault, victim rights for survivors, long and short terms effects, the reporting process, what to do after victimization and SASI services and resources for survivors in our community.

In conjunction with the presentation, attendees will have time to experience the “What Were You Wearing?” art exhibit, which depicts different outfits worn by real-life victims of sexual assault. These harrowing ordeals strike down the victim-blaming stereotype that provocative clothing is the cause of sexual assault, as a majority of those victimized were wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

Laredo College Counselor Sylvia Treviño said that both LC and SCAN coordinate services for the benefit of the students and offer referrals to appropriate agencies for assistance. SASI can also visit either campus to help students if they reach out for help. Regardless of who is reached, the ultimate goal is the assurance that all LC students, staff and faculty feel safe, are listened to and receive the help they need.

Students may reach LC Counseling and Disability Services by calling (956) 721-5137 or emailing counseling@laredo.edu for additional information about operating hours services and other resources.
