Laredo College students enjoyed meeting the unsung heroes in charge of keeping the college community safe.
The Laredo College Police Department held its second annual “Donuts & Coffee with LC PD” event on Sept. 26 at both campuses. Students had the opportunity to sit down over a hot cup of coffee and donuts while getting to know the 21 Laredo College police officers who patrol both college campuses daily and work diligently in the background to protect students, employees and community members.
The event included informational presentations on relevant topics such as the free LC Campus Shield app for LC students and employees, the types of services the department provides and a video presentation on the importance of the “If You See Something, Say Something” initiative.
“If You See Something, Say Something” is a national campaign that raises public awareness of the signs of terrorism and terrorism-related crime. It encourages individuals to report any suspicious activity or person(s) to law enforcement, school counselors, educators, parents and anyone with authority to do something before it is too late.
LC PD provides a safe and secure environment for students and the community. The department works closely with local, regional and federal law enforcement agencies by offering trainings and educational programs on safety, security, active shooter trainings and safety awareness trainings.
“Laredo College Police officers are committed to providing all our students with a safe and secure environment at each of our campuses so that they can focus and accomplish their educational goals,” said Interim Police Chief Jaime Castro.
He emphasized that the advice they give to all students is to be aware of their surroundings, report all suspicious behavior or persons, practice safety daily, minimize their vulnerability, get involved with their community and make a difference.
