LC hosting free interactive event for those interested in STEAM fields

Laredo College will be hosting an open house for people of all ages interested in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) on Thursday, Nov. 10 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ft. McIntosh Campus Kazen Student Center.

The free event will showcase Laredo College’s academic and workforce programs and the different career paths students can take if they decide to pursue STEAM degrees. These high-demand, well-compensated careers are an integral part of our society and offer a wide range of professional opportunities in different fields.

“The Latinx community is very underrepresented in the STEAM fields,” said Laredo College Natural Sciences Department Chair Selinda Martinez. “The purpose of this open house is to gain awareness and excitement about going into these fields.”

Attendees and prospective students will be able to enjoy musical performances by LC students, cybersecurity activities, virtual reality, informational booths and other hands-on activities. The Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center will bring some of its most popular critters.

The college will have indoor and outdoor activities showcasing the different programs in STEAM fields. The event will also showcase the college’s Natural Sciences Department, Mathematics Department, Computer Technology Department, Kinesiology Department, Health Sciences Department, Visual and Performing Arts Department and the LEAPS Program.

Academic advisors will be on hand if students have any questions about registration or courses offered at the college. Registration for Wintermester and Spring will open on Nov. 14.
