LC hosting free literacy symposium for professionals

The Laredo College Community Education Division is well-known for providing a wealth of educational resources and fostering literacy in our community.

In this regard, Laredo College and Literacy Texas have once again joined forces to co-host the 2023 Laredo Literacy Symposium on Thursday, June 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Laredo College Kazen Student Center. This year’s theme is “Literacy on the Border: Strengthening Our Community.”

The symposium is free to educators, volunteer tutors, ESL teachers and other library and nonprofit professionals who work in the fields of adult and family literacy.

Literacy Texas is a statewide initiative funded by various organizations that are interested in the future of Texans and their literacy levels. Literacy Texas encourages and incubates literacy groups around the state to increase their capacity through collaboration. They provide leadership to community-based organizations providing literacy services, literacy coalitions and adult education programs throughout the state to build capacity and improve literacy levels in Texas.

“Laredo College is enthusiastic of the Literacy Texas partnership and of this symposium, which will provide teachers with strategies for developing student growth across a range of disciplines and demographics. We are dedicated to fostering literacy as a means of improving and strengthening the community,” Laredo College Dean of Community Education Sandra Cortez said.

Professionals in the field will offer information on building literacy capacities for their communities and educate on the importance of community literacy. Attendees will learn about relevant topics such as financial literacy, civics integration, digital literacy and dysgraphia.

Registration is underway for the symposium. Seating is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 200 applicants.

Check-in for registered participants will open at 8 a.m. Although pre-registration is recommended, walk-ins are welcome. Breakfast and a working lunch will be provided.
