Native Laredoan, husband, father, and decorated war veteran are just a few words to describe Laredo College’s new Chief of Police, Jose Hernandez.
Taking his oath of office in front of a room filled with family, friends and law enforcement colleagues, Hernandez joins the Laredo College ranks after 20 years of service at the Webb County Sheriff’s Office.
Overseeing a department of highly-trained officers, which he hopes to expand over time, the U.S. Army veteran said he applied for the chief position at LC due to its educational focus and career growth prospects.
As a graduate of its Regional Law Enforcement Academy Class A-08 and Protective Services Department adjunct instructor, Hernandez is no stranger to LC. Additionally, he holds both a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Criminal Justice from Texas AandM International University and an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Laredo College.
“I’m grateful that I have been given the opportunity to lead this fine group of officers,” Hernandez said. “We will be engaging everyone as the professionals that we are.”
The new chief looks forward to strengthening the department through concurrent training on different law enforcement topics and continue providing an atmosphere of safety and security at both campuses.
His distinguished lifelong career of service in law enforcement and the military has earned him multiple accolades and recognitions, including the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3rd Award), Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/ M Device (2nd Award) and Texas Faithful Service Ribbon.
Laredo College is honored to welcome Chief Hernandez into the Palomino family as we continue our legacy of excellence in education and workforce development in our community.
