Laredo College’s Theatrical and Performing Arts Department is proud to be a part of Laredo’s vibrant cultural and artistic scene by bringing both classic and original productions to local stages.
This weekend, the college is excited to present the world premiere of its latest production, “The Coyote in the Stream.” A brainchild of new LC Theater Director Dave McGinnis, who wrote and directed, the play has never been produced anywhere else in the world.
Opening night is Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the LC Shoebox Theater located at the Ft. McIntosh Campus in historic downtown Laredo. There will be two additional performances, one on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee showing at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets will be $5 at the door and free for all Laredo College students and employees with ID.
The plot unfolds in a nameless valley where the desert meets the plains, in the home of Yvette, a young woman who lives alone in a small home. While scavenging through the valley for supplies, she finds another young woman, Elana, unconscious. Yvette brings Elana to her home to care for her, to later find out that she has run away from her husband.
Even Elana has never known his true name, even though they were married and lived in his home. He is human in form, but he is also something else. Enter Grandmother, though she is grandmother to no one. She heals the sick in the valley when and how she can.
All of this stems from the relatively nearby Gutierrez Ranch, a now-abandoned tract of land that has long fascinated the valley’s residents with its mysterious past and strong evidence of former glory.
McGinnis said he thoroughly enjoyed the creative process of working with the actors, altering the initial script he had written by incorporating their perspectives and taking into account the unique way they portrayed the characters.
“It turns into a literally magical experience for everybody. It gets fairly dark, and they end up going places mentally and emotionally that they never expected,” he said.
