LC sets standard for community service through Big Event

Laredo College is setting a standard for community service with over 100 volunteers dedicating their Saturday morning at the Paso del Indio Trail and the South Texas Food Bank.

The Big Event started in 1982 at Texas A&M University and has since become a nationwide initiative dedicated to expressing gratitude to our community through service projects.

LC student Emily Elizondo said she was glad to be part of this effort after realizing how frequently safety and sanitary issues became a topic of conversation in the news.

“My aim was to have a positive influence on my community,” Elizondo said. “I dedicated some time volunteering by cleaning up the river and starting the garden at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center.”

It was an opportunity to demonstrate that LC does make a difference and that you can too, she added.

“We are trying to build a cohesive and consistent community service program on campus,” LC Director of Student Life Pedro Rivera said. “The Big Event was a great way to learn more about what LC offers and how to give back to campus.”

LC’s active participation in community service initiatives like the Big Event not only demonstrates its commitment to making a positive impact but also inspires students to become agents of change within their communities, fostering a culture of service and responsibility that extends far beyond the campus grounds.
