As the end of the school year nears, keeping children physically active and intellectually engaged is a top priority for parents. Laredo College will meet both of these objectives through its first-ever health sciences summer camp, which will take place June 10 to June 14.
The camp is an amazing opportunity for children ages 11 to 14 to learn about the six different healthcare fields Laredo College offers: Medical Assisting, Emergency Medical Services, Physical Therapist Assistant, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Radiology and Nursing.
The weeklong camp will be held at the LC South College of Health Sciences Building, 5500 Zapata Highway. Space is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registration is $25 per child, and the deadline to register and pay is Friday, May 31 by 11 a.m. Payments can be made at the Bursar’s Office at the Ft. McIntosh or South Campus.
This specialized camp will be run by Laredo College faculty, all of whom are licensed or certified health professionals, and LC students with hands-on externship clinical experience.
Campers will engage in hands-on activities that will let them learn about basic anatomy and diseases, solve medical mysteries and perform patient simulations using cutting-edge technologies in the same labs and classrooms LC students use for their clinical training.
LC Medical Assistant Program Director Graciela Gonzales, who will serve as the camp director, said the camp’s goal is to expand opportunities that spark interest in health professions among middle school students.
“We aim to motivate these young minds to become future health leaders. To achieve this, we collaborated with a team of students from our Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Leadership Program, multiple departments on campus and external partners to coordinate and host a camp offering practical learning experiences,” she said. “We encourage parents to register their children for this incredible opportunity to explore high-demand careers in the health sciences and learn from healthcare experts.”
Camp hours will be from Monday, June 10 to Thursday, June 13 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday, June 14 from 8-10 a.m. A ceremony of completion will take place on Friday, June 14 at 9 a.m. at the College of Health Sciences Building.
