Family bonds pave the way to success for LC PTA student

Success is measured not only by the steps forward we take but also by those we help and who help us along the way. Mariana Ortiz’s steps across the graduation stage were not just an embodiment of her dedication and hard work but also the love and support she received from her family and friends.

With a family made up of medical professionals, Ortiz had many inspirations to pull from. She graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assistant and plans to start working in the PTA field this year.

“Growing up, I watched my older brother participate in the Alexander Health Science Magnet, which inspired me to follow in his footsteps,” Ortiz said. “After being accepted into the same program as him, I had the opportunity to shadow a physical therapy clinic, giving me insight into the field and leaving me with the idea of potentially pursuing this career in the future.”

With her family cheering and celebrating in their seats as she crossed, Ortiz held her head up high as she completed a significant chapter of her life. She will now continue to inspire her younger sister alongside the rest of their family.

Just before her graduation, Ortiz shared a special moment with her sister as they walked through the LC College of Health Sciences Building amid her cap and gown photoshoot. As the newest member of the family now in the medical field, she said she was nervous about being a role model but will always be ready to answer any questions her younger sister has on her journey within her prospective occupational therapy program.

“I’m in physical therapy, and she will be studying occupational therapy, and we hope to one day work together,” she added. “That is one of the fun things we can think about our future.”

Ortiz said she has always been interested in a healthcare profession where she can help others and contribute to their overall well-being. Whether by helping a patient recover from an injury, assisting an older adult in maintaining mobility and balance or providing therapy to someone with a neurological condition, she was always eager to learn new ways to help others.

“Being able to witness the impact of physical therapy on individuals during my shadowing hours is what inspired me to continue on this path. Something that excites me about being a physical therapist assistant is that each day can have its unique set of challenges of working with a diverse set of patients,” Ortiz said. “This type of job setting keeps it engaging, and I’m eager to embrace the opportunities for growth in the physical therapy field.”

The unbreakable bonds at home were not her only means of support. She reminisced about her new family within her cohort and how their experience was their own, and only they could know what it was like to strive toward graduation together.

“One of my fondest memories from the program was the friendship that developed over time with all my classmates. Through long study sessions, the ups and downs of our academic journey and the celebration of achievements, we created a strong group that I’ll always love and cherish,” Ortiz said.
