Laredo College’s legacy of postsecondary education, career readiness and economic mobility was recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), which presented the highly coveted STAR Award for demonstrating exceptional contributions to student success and workforce development in Texas.
Dean of Community Education Sandra Cortez celebrated receiving this prestigious award for the first time in the college’s history. She added that, among community colleges and universities from across the state, LC’s Continuing Education Department emerged as a standout, receiving the award in the Workforce Development category for its groundbreaking Laredo CARES initiative.

The LC Continuing Education Department staff’s continued efforts have resulted in new and returning students reaching higher goals through accessible and affordable programs. The value of short-term training programs serves as a bridge between education and employment. Some programs also offer micro-credentials leading to advanced certifications, allowing students to follow a path to higher education while working.
These programs enhance economic mobility, meet workforce demands and support lifelong learning, making them an invaluable asset to the community. They also help remove barriers to participation, allowing individuals to focus entirely on their training.
For example, through Laredo CARES, new HVAC students gained a stronger advantage on their academic journey after LC, the City of Laredo and Workforce Solutions for South Texas held an equipment giveaway that provided students with new work boots and tools.
Furthermore, Laredo CARES not only provides education and training but also offers a holistic support system that includes essential services, such as childcare, transportation vouchers, resume-building workshops and job placement opportunities, which are provided to qualified participants.
This recognition underscores Laredo College’s unwavering commitment to student success and workforce development. We are proud of everyone who contributed to this milestone.
