LC designated as mother-friendly worksite through collaboration with Public Health Department

In celebration of National Public Health Week, the City of Laredo Public Health Department’s Healthy Texas Mothers and Babies Program is proud to announce that Laredo College has officially earned the designation of a Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite (TMFW).

“Laredo College is proud to work with the City of Laredo Public Health Department to provide this service to our employees and students,” LC President Dr. Minita Ramírez said. “It is a clear example of the strength women possess to continue their education while caring for their children, and it is paramount we provide any help we can give.”

The college joins a growing movement of workplaces that are committed to supporting breastfeeding employees and students by establishing a family-friendly environment that reinforces the vital connection between workplace wellness and public health.

“Having both Laredo College campuses designated as Texas Mother-Friendly Worksites is a huge step in supporting both employees and students who are balancing their education, careers and parenthood,” Laredo Public Health Technician Alejandra Rodriguez said. “This designation ensures that breastfeeding individuals have access to dedicated spaces and support, making it easier to continue their breastfeeding journey without added stress.”

She added that the City of Laredo Public Health Department and LC are working together to promote family-friendly policies that create a healthier, more inclusive environment for our community. By prioritizing lactation support, we are fostering a culture where parents feel empowered and valued in both their academic and professional lives.

Workplace lactation programs have been shown to benefit both families and employers as breastfeeding lowers the risk of many infant illnesses, including respiratory infections and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Both LC campuses now join the 131 designated worksites in Webb County and over 3,500 across Texas, setting a powerful example for institutions and businesses across the region in building healthier communities.
