The Laredo College Police Department (LCPD) is the law enforcement agency responsible for carrying out all the laws of the state of Texas and maintaining a safe and secure environment at all LC campuses, events and venues.
The hard-working and experienced team is led by Laredo College Police Chief Jose Hernandez, who took charge of the department in 2023 and oversees a department of highly-trained officers.
The department maintains a high police presence, investigates any crimes committed at both campuses and works with other law enforcement agencies in helping to maintain a safe and secure educational environment for all LC students, faculty, staff and visitors. It also has multiple officers who are state-certified hostage negotiators and certified Emergency Medical Responders.
LCPD has also established excellent partnerships with several agencies and organizations to serve the people of our community. For instance, the department joined forces with the United Independent School District Police Department, Laredo Independent School District Police Department and the Laredo College Regional Law Enforcement Academy instructors to provide active shooter training to all its police personnel at the college’s Ft. McIntosh Campus.
Additionally, the department was recently awarded two grants by the State of Texas Governor’s Office of Public Safety: Operation Lone Star and Operation Stone Garden.
These grants will enhance LCPD’s resources, improve officer effectiveness and strengthen campus safety. The Operation Lone Star and Operation Stone Garden initiatives will enhance border security and combat criminal activity, supporting LCPD’s ability to maintain a safe campus environment. The ballistic shields will improve officer safety during high-risk situations.
“The grant funding and monies awarded to the Laredo College Police Department will significantly enhance our ability to protect our students, faculty and staff,” Laredo College Police Chief Jose Hernandez said. “These resources will strengthen our emergency response capabilities, ensuring that our officers are equipped to handle any situation with greater efficiency and safety. This initiative is a direct reflection of our department’s motto, ‘Palominos First,’ as we continue to prioritize the protection and security of everyone on our campus.”
LCPD monitors the Campus Shield Safety app for students, faculty, staff and the LC community. This effort is in coordination with the LC Compliance and Risk Management Division under Dr. David Arreazola.
LC police officers have also hosted presentations on active shooter situations, drunk driving and the dangers of alcohol abuse and other personal awareness and safety measures.
The department looks forward to continue creating awareness, educating students and the community on these important matters and can be contacted for in-class presentations at LC or throughout the community.
