LC November art extravaganza kicks off this week

The Laredo College art disciplines are excited about this month’s free showcases of art, music and theater. Community art lovers are in for a treat as the college’s talented students show off their work through art galleries and musical performances throughout November.

Kicking off the month are LC Professor of Art Mary Provence’s students, who will feature their work at the Martha Fenstermaker Memorial Visual Arts Gallery from Friday, Nov. 7 to Dec. 5 with no cost to enter. “The Giving Gallery” will consist of 75 artworks that are up for sale, donated by students who will receive $500 art supply kits funded by a generous $10,000 grant from James Avery Jewelry.

The exhibit’s opening reception is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and will follow normal gallery hours until its last day. The community can visit the gallery Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. to continue supporting the arts.

“Art lovers in attendance can expect a vibrant and diverse exhibition that reflects the talent and imagination of Laredo College art students,” Provence said. “The show features an array of media including fiber art, paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and mixed media work, each piece revealing a glimpse into the students’ creativity and skill development.”

According to Provence, artwork sold through the gallery will replenish the James Avery Jewelry scholarship fund that provided students with art supplies. Buyers can pick up their purchased art on the last day of the gallery.

For those with “México en la piel,” Mariachis Los Palominos’ Juan Capetillo will perform a farewell solo recital on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the Pvt. David B. Barkeley Cantu Veterans Memorial Chapel. Graduating this semester, Capetillo will be joined by bandmates and LC Mariachi Instructor Luis Leal at the recital, who will cheer him on from the audience before moving on to the next steps after LC.

According to Leal, the audience will see firsthand how Capetillo showcases mastery of different mariachi instruments as well as vocal works. It will also be a great opportunity for Capetillo to gain experience by performing different styles from the repertoire in a recital setting and to showcase abilities that accompany a soloist.

On Nov. 18, music students will perform at the Pvt. David B. Barkley Cantu Veterans Memorial Chapel. The 6:15 p.m. performance will be a delight to all those in attendance as it features solo and small ensembles performed by the vast array of students who take Applied Music Lessons, LC Music Instructor Eddie Vandewalker said.

“LC students will have the opportunity to support their fellow students who will be sharing their talents during the recital,” he added in a call for fellow students to support their classmates and the arts in the community.
