Laredo College REC Week 2026 is gearing up to get the blood pumping and the fun flowing starting Monday, Feb. 23. Students are in for a wonderful time as the Recreation and Esports Department has a slew of events involving their facilities at both the Ft. McIntosh and South Campus.
The National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) was founded on February 22 and is commemorated every year with National Rec Day, during which institutions of higher education nationwide celebrate student recreation, health and activity. LC is proud to celebrate Palominos enjoying their time on campus that also helps them stay active and healthy.
“NIRSA Rec Day matters because it celebrates the role recreation plays in higher education and reminds us that recreation is truly for everyone,” LC Recreational and Esports Director Ivan Cano said.

According to LC Recreation Coordinator Anabel Contreras, Recreation is about creating a space where everyone belongs, no matter who they are or where they come from. She said that some of her best undergraduate memories were made while working at her campus recreation center, and now, coming full circle as a professional staff member, she can see just how powerful Rec truly is.
“Rec is where you find your people. It’s where fun, connection, growth, and belonging all collide. It’s a place to show up as yourself, stay active, try new things, and feel supported,” Contreras said. “NIRSA REC Day is important because it celebrates more than programs or facilities, it celebrates community, opportunity, and a safe environment where people can grow, connect, and thrive together.”
