LC and Mexican Consulate award $36K in scholarships to empower students

Laredo College is proud to announce the continuation of its impactful partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Laredo through the IMME Becas Scholarship Program. This initiative, established in 2015, reflects a shared commitment to expanding educational access for students of Mexican origin residing in the United States.

The IMME Becas Program, led by the Instituto de Mexicanos y Mexicanas en el Exterior (IMME) under Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), aims to improve access to education at all levels: adult, secondary and higher education. Through this collaboration, students are empowered to pursue their academic goals and contribute to the development of the border region.

This year, a total of $36,000 in scholarships were awarded, with the Instituto Cultural Mexicano de Laredo providing $10,000, the Consulate donating $7,000 and Grupo FEMA adding another $1,000 in generous contributions. Laredo College proudly matched those funds with the other $18,000. These funds will be managed by the Development Office under the guidance of the Vice President of Institutional Advancement. Eighteen students will each benefit from this monumental support, helping to ease financial burdens and support their educational journey.

“IMME scholarships help finance the higher education of students who are part of a culture of cooperation and binational identity that strengthens the unique identity of this border region,” Consul General of Mexico in Laredo Juan Carlos Mendoza Sánchez said. “They are made possible through the joint efforts of the Consulate General of Mexico, Laredo College, Instituto Cultural Mexicano de Laredo and local partners such as FEMA.”

This ongoing partnership underscores the Mexican government’s dedication to supporting its nationals abroad. By investing in education, the IMME Becas Program fosters empowerment, integration and development for students living and studying in the United States.

“At Laredo College, we believe that education is the most powerful tool for transforming lives and communities,” LC President Dr. Minita Ramírez said. “Our continued partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Laredo through the IMME Becas Program reaffirms our shared commitment to empowering students of Mexican origin. These scholarships not only ease financial burdens but also open doors to opportunity, growth and long-term success for our students and the border region as a whole.”
