Undergraduate Research Students

Have you ever been curious on how something happens or interested in knowing more about a topic? Undergraduate research gives you the opportunity to explore your topic of interest and gain skills applicable to both research and non-research. Students who complete all the trainings, assignments, and undergraduate research activities will receive a $500 stipend at the end of the semester.

Student Eligibility

  • Must be a LEAPS POWER student enrolled for classes in the semester completing research.

Student Requirements

  • Attend 5 Writing Center Workshop throughout the semester. (Selecting Credible Sources, Research Paper, APA Format, Grammar, and Understanding the Structure of Journal Articles)
  • Complete 5 online quizzes. Plagiarism quiz, Grammar quiz, Critical Thinking Quiz, Problem-Solving Quiz, and Research Ethic Quiz.
  • Complete 3 mandatory trainings. Responsible Conduct of Research Training, Lab Safety Training, and Excel for Data Science.
  • Complete Research Paper and Poster. As part of the requirements student must write an APA formatted research paper and construct a research poster with the guidance of their faculty student mentor.
  • Student Showcase. Disseminate research at the end of the semester at the Student Showcase.
  • Faculty Mentoring. Meet with faculty mentor at least 1 hour per week.
  • Attend student conference. Travel to conference to disseminate undergraduate research, network with other researchers, and attend professional development workshops.

Step 1. Define your interest. Need to find a topic that interest you.

Step 2. Create a research proposal. Student must submit a detailed project proposal as part of their application. Set an appointment with the STEM Coordinator to guide you in the process.

Step 3. Identify a Faculty Mentor. Once you have completed your research proposal, you will be paired up with a faculty mentor to help modify your research proposal.

Step 4. Submit research proposal to IRB Committee. Each research submitted by a faculty or student must be approved by the Laredo College IRB committee

Step 5. Complete Responsible Conduct of Research Training. To ensure that all researchers are trained to conduct their research in an informed and responsible manner, LEAPS POWER has implemented the Responsible Conduct of Research Training Offered through CITI Program.
