Eligibility

Eligibility

The Upward Bound Program is a federally funded TRIO program through the U.S. Department of Education that helps students prepare for success in high school, college, and beyond.

To be eligible for the Upward Bound Program, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in 9th through 12th grade.
  • Attend one of the following participating high schools:
    • Leo Cigarroa High School
    • Joseph W. Nixon High School
    • Lyndon B. Johnson High School
    • Raymond & Tirza Martin High School
    • United South High School
  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or otherwise eligible to participate under federal TRIO program guidelines.
  • Be a potential first-generation college student (neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree) and/or meet federal income eligibility guidelines.
  • Demonstrate the motivation and potential to successfully complete high school and pursue a college education.
  • Be willing to actively participate in all required program activities, including academic enrichment, tutoring, workshops, college visits, cultural activities, and the Summer Program.

Required Documentation

Applicants may be asked to submit the following:

  • Completed Upward Bound Application
  • Parent/Guardian Consent Forms
  • Proof of Citizenship or Permanent Residency (if applicable)
  • Most Recent Federal Income Tax Return or Income Verification
  • Current High School Transcript or Report Card
  • School Attendance Record
  • Standardized Test Scores (if available)

Program Commitment

Students accepted into the Upward Bound Program are expected to attend scheduled activities, maintain satisfactory academic progress, demonstrate positive conduct, and actively work toward graduating from high school and enrolling in a college or university.

There is no cost to participate. All program services are provided free of charge through funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
