Early FAFSA with Prior-Prior Year (PPY)

Changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA):

Submit a FAFSA Earlier:

Students will be able to submit a 2019-2020 FAFSA as early as October 01, 2018, rather than beginning on January 01, 2019. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit their FAFSAs as early as October 1 every year.

Use Earlier Income and Tax Information:

Beginning with the 2017-2018 FAFSA, students will be required to report income and tax information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2022-2023 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) will report their 2020 income and tax information, rather than their 2021 income and tax information. Because of this, almost all tax filers will be able to electronically transfer their tax information directly into their FAFSA by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT).

Beginning with 2017-2018 award year::

  • The FAFSA will be available three months earlier than previously allowed: October 1.
  • The income used on the FAFSA will be from two years prior to the application year ("Prior-Prior Year").
