Rancho La Union Plaza
Rancho La Union Plaza is the newest recreational area on the Fort McIntosh Campus. It is a park-style area featuring a gazebo, water fountain and a scenic landscape, located between the Private David B. Barkeley Veterans Memorial Chapel and the LC President's Home on the west side of campus. In 2008, the plaza was named after the ranchland of the late Guadalupe Martinez, which according to historical records, was one of the first ranches in Zapata County that originated from Spanish settlements granted in 1767 during the Spanish Visita Real. Martinez was a descendant of one of those original settlers that began Rancho La Union. He inherited the ranch from his family in the 20th century, and worked there from the time he was a small child until his 80s. LC dedicated the campus plaza in honor of Martinez and Rancho La Union for the major financial contributions the college has received through the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Foundation. |
